In a move that pairs generosity with a clear warning, the United States has committed $2 billion for United Nations emergency relief operations. Yet, this funding came with a blunt warning for the international body: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Significant Pledge During Wider Budget Reductions
The pledge came against a backdrop of significant reductions in US funding for global aid. Further cuts are expected from other major contributors including European nations. The US representative, a senior Trump administration figure, delivered the announcement alongside the UN's top humanitarian official.

Furthermore, the stipulations prohibit spending on initiatives focused on climate change, deemed not "life saving" and against "American interests."

The UN's humanitarian chief and the wider UN system say they wholehearted support for efficiency and focus, noting that prudent use of funds is in everyone's interest, especially the estimated 200 million people affected by emergencies.
