Colombia's President Declares 'I Would Return to Arms Once More' should United States Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump and Colombia's president have intensified the tone in their verbal conflict, further raising tensions between the two countries after American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates cocaine mills and processing labs and his time is running out," Trump added.

Rising Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Addressing journalists on Sunday, the American leader threatened analogous military action towards the South American nation, stating Colombia is “very sick too” and “run by a sick man who likes making the drug and trafficking it to the US."

Although Colombia is the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the illicit industry.

A Frayed Relationship

This nation has long been a staunch collaborator of the United States in the campaign against drug trafficking and benefited from wide political approval in Washington, yet ties have worsened markedly following Trump came to office.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is predominantly run by criminal organizations such as the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom disbanded subsequent to a 2016 peace deal.

Petro's Strong Response

When asked if a military operation comparable to Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good from my perspective."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am not illegitimate and I am not involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments uninformed. Cease defaming me," he posted online.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will become numerous insurgents in the hills. If they capture the nation's leader, which a large part of Colombians admires and supports, they will release the powerful force of the people," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed some years as a young man belonging with the radical M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed that he never took part in armed clashes. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in writing the nation's constitution over three decades ago and later became a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I swore to abstain from using arms again ... but for the homeland I would take up arms again," he vowed.

Increased Security along with Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Petro's security detail was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump, but voices from across the ideological divide have denounced the threats of American military action on Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Sanctions

The US cancelled the president's entry visa subsequent to he encouraged American soldiers to disobey unlawful commands. Later, in October, it placed asset freezes on Petro, the first lady and several close collaborators.

Concurrently as the US increased its forces in the region and targeting suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted strikes on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
